The city got its name from fossilized Devonian coral reefs discovered in limestone beds along the Iowa River in the 1860s. A Harvard zoologist's lecture on "The Coral Reefs of Iowa City" inspired early residents to name the area Coralville, though this city ended up as Ely, named after railroad promoter John F. Ely when it was platted in 1872.
